7pm for 7:30pm at the Hull University Business School School lecture theatre Derwent Building:
Eur Ing Brian C Tompsett
When William Gibson coined the term Cyberspace it was followed by a rash of science fiction that explored how the banes of society, such as Crime, War and Terrorism will fill the Cyberworld. The most recent dark Cyberspace fiction was the Matrix series of movies. Many of us have some exposure to criminality on the Internet when we open our email, or browse internet auctions for bargains. Some of those bargains, are too good to be true!
This talk surveys the incidents and mechanisms of crime of the Internet to illustrate the scope of the problem in reality, as compared to those imagined in fiction. It then examines how modern warfare and terrorism has also become a reality that is fought across the network of cyberspace. The talk will contain material that will be of interest to the technical and non-technical audience alike, and will hopefully act as a catalyst for further awareness raising of the issues and discussions.
The Humberside BCS has an active student sub groups at both Hull and Scarborough, which also organise event that may be of interest to members.
